FMC recently submitted on a draft management plan for Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park. This park is now governed by DOC and Ngāti Whare following a Treaty Settlement.
FMC emphasised the need to recognise the unique values of this forest, as one of the most magnificent living cathedrals in the world, as part of that there needs to be definite targets for pest control that must be met.
FMC also put forward both the need for a re-think of frontcountry recreation, suggesting the creation of a new hub to provide secure parking, camping and a single access to a track network (the current opportunities while in relatively close proximity are dispersed in terms of facilities) and the need to recognise and commit to the unique, internationally significant, forest immersion experience enabled by the Whirinaki’s backcountry hut and track network.
FMC’s final point was support for continued work with forestry owners to provide guaranteed access to the south of the park, with a suggestion to also consider access from the east via the Te Hoe river.
