Pathways to Adventure

FMC is calling on all of the outdoors community interested in the future of backcountry recreation north of Taupo to gather for a workshop on the 28th of May, at Waitawheta Camp at the northern end of the Kaimai range.
Backcountry recreation for the more than 50% of our population that live above Lake Taupo is at threat. Declining DOC budgets have shrunk hut and track networks in the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges and in many of the remaining wild places recreation is considered at odds with protecting biodiversity such as kauri trees, kokako and native frogs.
Solutions are required for how trampers, climbers, hunters, mountain bikers and canyoners can enjoy their pursuits with respect to each other and their environment.
Hear from volunteers maintaining huts, tracks and trap-lines. Listen to land managers trying to spend our money wisely. Heed scientists trying to protect nature and take note from outdoor leaders inspiring participation, developing new opportunities and organising people into the great outdoors.
