A day of conservation discussion for trampers, climbers, mountaineers, hunters and others.

Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (FMC) is hosting a day of conservation discussion at St Johns Hall on Saturday June 14th in association with their AGM. In the morning, the Minister of Conservation, Nick Smith, will present his vision for New Zealand’s conservation lands, followed by both Ruth Dyson MP (Labour) and Eugenie Sage MP (Green) speaking about the conservation priorities of their parties. There will be opportunities for questions.

The afternoon will consist of four workshops on current conservation issues, viewed through the lenses of active outdoor recreationalists. The goal of the workshops is to develop resolutions for the full FMC Executive to consider when it meets the next day:

  • What to do with S62 Stewardship Lands?
  • Battle for the Birds: Should FMC actively promote aerial 1080 for predator control in the back country?
  • How do we make partnerships with DOC work for everyone?
  • How should FMC deal with Kauri Dieback Disease
