The Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (FMC) remains firmly opposed to the proposed Waitaha Hydro scheme.
We are aware that Whitewater New Zealand (WWNZ) has reached an agreement with Westpower on behalf of the whitewater community. We recognise that this is an extremely difficult moment for the whitewater community, and we acknowledge the challenging position WWNZ has been placed in.
FMC has not made, nor will it seek, any such agreement with Westpower that erodes our organisational values. However, we are committed to working constructively alongside the developer and our broader recreation community to achieve the best outcomes for all recreational users of the Waitaha valley—including trampers, whitewater paddlers, canyoners, and others.
“This situation is a stark reminder of the failings of the Fast Track Approvals Act, “ says FMC President Megan Dimozantos. “Legislation that functions well should not result in affected communities feeling their only option is to “cut a deal” that undermines their long-held values.”
FMC continues to engage with stakeholders to ensure that foot access in the Waitaha valley is secured and maintained, and that the wild and pristine nature of this special place is protected. We expect the expert panel assessing the application under the Fast Track process to recognise that mitigation for recreational impacts remains unresolved, and that FMC be formally consulted as an affected party.
