Clubs

Join Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest outdoor community, stand up for the backcountry, and enjoy great benefits while you’re at it.

Join a club

Looking to grow your outdoor skills, connect with like-minded people, and find companions for bigger adventures? Your local club is a great place to start. Whether it’s tramping, mountaineering, climbing, kayaking, biking, paragliding, caving — or whatever gets you into the outdoors — there’s a club for everyone across the country.

Join as a member club

No matter your size or location, if your club connects with the backcountry through active, non-motorised recreation, FMC is here to support you. We offer two types of membership for clubs and groups.

Club membership options

  • Ideal for clubs wanting access to FMC benefits for all its members.
  • Your club decides how many members you register (minimum of 5).
  • Great for smaller clubs or clubs with diverse recreational interests

Membership runs from March to February, but you can apply at any time. We’re happy to discuss pro-rata fees if you join part way through the year.

Why join us?

There are many benefits to joining FMC as a club:

  • advice and support on club matters — from advocacy on local issues to legal guidance
  • access to funding — clubs can apply for Training Grants, and members can apply for Expedition Scholarships or Youth Award Grants
  • entry into our photo competition — with great prizes
  • free access to a selection of NZ Mountain Film Festival films
  • promotion of your club’s events and notices through FMC’s communication channels
  • Backcountry magazine in print — for each of your declared members
  • FMC discount card for each declared member — includes 55+ discounts, such as 20% off a DOC Annual Hut Pass

By joining FMC, your club becomes part of a national movement advocating for the wise management of Aotearoa’s backcountry and the protection of our recreational opportunities. The more clubs and members we represent, the stronger our collective voice becomes.

FAQs

No. Your club or group does not need to be incorporated to join FMC.

We send all discount cards and each issue of Backcountry magazine to your club’s address. Clubs then distribute these to their registered members.

If registered club members want Backcountry delivered to their personal address, they can subscribe to the direct-to-you (D2U) service for an additional $25 per year.
