Who We Are

FMC is a non-profit organisation working to protect and nurture outdoor recreation and New Zealand’s outstanding nature and backcountry.

For over 90 years FMC has been the leading voice for outdoor recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand. Beginning as a small federation of tramping and alpine clubs, today we represent 100 member groups with more than 20,000 members who enjoy tramping, mountaineering, ski touring, climbing, canyoning, caving, mountain biking, whitewater paddling, paragliding and hang gliding.

Our advocacy has achieved increased protection of New Zealand’s wild places through the designation of National Parks, Conservation Parks and Wilderness Areas. We work to protect the important legacy of the backcountry hut and track network, seek further public access to our public conservation lands and waters and contribute to farsighted conservation planning processes. Our work also helps foster a community of skilled and supportive outdoors people who believe in egalitarianism in the hills and share their knowledge and experience with others. FMC’s strength comes from our active participation in outdoor recreation, our enduring connection with the land, our wide membership and the commitment of our volunteers.

FMC is an independent, apolitical organisation run by volunteers

Join us if you too believe in the freedom of the hills.
