FMC Encouraged to see Ahuriri reclassifications

FMC is very supportive of DOC’s proposal to add 4808 hectares of stewardship land adjacent to the Ahuriri Conservation Park to the Park. The Ahuriri Conservation Park is one of a network of highcountry parks that FMC, along with Forest and Bird, successfully campaigned for in the 2000’s.
The larger blocks to be reclassified are the Ohau Moraines Wetland Complex and the Ribbonwood Conservation Area, the former especially has significance as it increases the representativeness of the local habitats within the Park
FMC has been campaigning for further protection of stewardship land since 2014, and with the near completion of an intensive process (by DOC and Conservation Boards) of likely land parcel identification and prioritisation, we will be pushing for a dramatic increase in activity over the next several years.
